Digitalization Tools and Skillsets in the Process Industry

In the recent decade, digitalization has made significant progress and rapidly impacting the role of chemical engineers in the process industry. The chemical engineering discipline is no stranger to digital tools and skillsets. Coding skills and simulation skills (process simulation) have been an integral part of the curriculum and skillsets imparted to chemical engineering students in higher education institutions. With the rapid development and implementation of new digitalization technologies such as Digital Twin (DT), Augmented Reality (AR)/ Virtual Reality (VR) and Machine Learning (ML) tools, it is important to look within our current curriculum to better prepare our students for their future workplace.

In this talk, we will discuss the impacts of the digitalization on process safety and process engineering. We will also present some of the recent addition in our undergraduate and graduate curriculum to provide students with better understanding of digitalization tools used in the industry and to equip them with specific skillsets that will help them to navigate the demands of the digital transformation in process industry.
